S4 E15: Republicanism

These are some authors we really agree with! Join us as we look at the foundational republican thinkers: James Harrington, Algernon Sidney, and Montesquieu. We discuss Harrington's economic-based republicanism of Oceana, with the ability of freeholders to form militias and defend themselves against the government. We also talk about Sidney's aristocracy-based popular republic, and heavily feature Montesquieu's spirit-based approach to politics, which is something that we both agree should be discussed more in the modern day. We break down how these theories could (and should) be applied today, why they are so important, and also why firefighters think too highly of themselves.
