S4E84: The Homeschool Journey- Your Questions Answered

from Honey! I'm Homeschooling The Kids · host Robyn Robertson

Welcome! In this episode I am talking about the Homeschool Journey and addressing questions from listeners. Homeschooling and Unschooling Questions Dealing with homeschool overwhelm? What you can do and why the solution sometimes means doing less, not more. What happens when the homeschool honeymoon is over? The importance of going back to your "WHY" and matching learning with purpose. I share questions and prompts that help you to start exploring your beliefs around learning and why this is important in building a strong home learning foundation. How can we support our kids interests and passions? Getting to know our child's interests How we can start to gather resources to support them Ways that we can document their learning (even when it doesn't look like school style learning) How do I know my child is learning? Should I give them tests in homeschooling? Why academics are only a small part of learning. Soft Skills The advantage of being in communication and conversation with your child Examples from our homeschooling life- how I know my kids are learning Applying and practicing knowledge-when learning is relevant and meaningful How do I apply resources to different age groups? Ways to support reading around the home Recognizing when basic needs must be met The importance of space and downtime How we find learning resources out of the everyday things in our home The Home Education Road Trip I find that more often than not, our immediate response to solving a problem is finding a person or a checklist that will just tell me what to do. But here's the thing. Homeschooling, just like every family that does it, is unique to each of us. We come from different backgrounds, communities, environments and different perspectives. A 1-10 checklist is not a guarantee to solve all of our problems. That is why in this episode I relate our home educating journey to the family road trip. We could be Unschooling, Classical homeschooling, Waldorf homeschool..it all applies to our individual situations. Each of us will be taking different transportation, will want to make different stops and may need longer or shorter breaks depending on where we are going, who we are and what we want to see and experience. I would love to know if this analogy - the road trip of home education- resonated with you. Send me a message or reach out on social media to let me know.
