S5E33 - MTG Jumpstart - "Oh yeah, I want the +1 unicorns"

from Geek to Geek Podcast · host Geek to Geek Media

In This Episode: This week we talk Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart, the completely new format that Void loves (link below). MTG Jumpstart is both an online format that Arena uses as special events, but also an in-person, physical format where players can buy booster packs of cards set to a particular theme. These packs have 20 different cards in them, that are (apparently) semi-random. Then, you choose a second theme, shuffle them together, and you have a surprisingly versatile and useful deck -- at least against other Jumpstart decks. We feel like the format could absolutely be wonderful in tournament form, and it's a great way to spice up home and friendly games, too. Grab a booster box and then go to town making fun themes like Treehugging Mermaids or Walled Lightning. Fun stuff.  Jumpstart really does seem to be a way for Magic: The Gathering to be more of an evergreen game without nearly the investment that keeps people from becoming long-term players. So yeah...we're excited about it. Void is very excited about it. You can find out more about Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/products/jumpstart Weekly Geekery Beej binged both seasons of Umbrella Academy, and is now hankering for more. He even subbed to ComiXology Unlimited to read the graphic novels to see how they compare. The discussion last week on Marvel's Avengers beta made him boot up Batman: Arkham Knight, but the batmobile ruined things for him. Void spent a whole lot of time with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, making it through the midpoint of the Desmond arc and getting reacquatinted with the open world feel the game uses. Recursion by Blake Crouch is a crazy good book that is really hard to explain, but deals with real and false memories and how they interact, and EVE Online was released as a mobile game called EVE Echoes, and it is...EVE. Though we're not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Support the Podcast on Patreon The Patreon is shifting gears a little.
