The continued failure to detect WIMPs has led to a "Dark Crisis" and more speculative theories. Some scientists suggest dark matter could be primordial black holes formed during the Big Bang, or "fuzzy" dark matter made of extremely light particles. Challenges also arise from "dragonfly galaxies" like Dragonfly 44, which appear to lack dark matter entirely, a problem for both CDM and MOND theories. Physicist Erik Verlinde proposes emergent gravity, where gravity is not a fundamental force but emerges from a deeper level of reality, potentially removing the need for dark matter. Some fresh thinking suggests that MOND and CDM might even work in concert. As the search continues through deep-mine experiments, the ISS, and massive telescopes in Chile, theorists remain at a frontier of trying to explain why 95% of the universe remains invisible.
