S9E55 Throwback Thursday Season 2007/08

from Scottish Football Forums Podcast · host SFF Podcast

Regulars Good John and Krys are joined by Director of Podcasting Craig, who returns after a two year absence. Welcome back boss! The guys go back in time to season 2007/08, one which their respective club sides feature prominently, particularly in Europe. To summarise, it was a season that gave renewed hope for our game. The Scotland National Team were punching well above their weight, winning in France and comprehensively swept Ukraine aside at Hampden and looked good for qualifying for Euro 2008. Ultimately, it ended in glorious failure once more after a cruel defeat by World Champions Italy in the final minute. Our domestic sides were performing well on the continent too, with THREE sides still in Europe after Christmas. Aberdeen thumped Copenhagen to reach the UEFA Cup last 32, and gave Bayern Munich a scare at Pittodrie before going out. Celtic reached the last 16 of the Champions League, defeating defending Champions AC Milan on their way. Rangers had the disappointment of dropping into the UEFA Cup, but made up for that by going all the way to the Final in Manchester. Unfortunately for them, it didn’t go according to plan on and off the pitch. Domestically, the Old Firm were involved in one of the closest title races ever, with the destiny of the title not decided until a rearranged last day of the season. Ultimately, it was Celtic who came out on top with a third consecutive title, with Rangers winning the Cup Double. Their Scottish Cup Final opponents were First Division Queen of the South, who caused the biggest upset of the season by beating Aberdeen in the Semi Final. The campaign was also tinged with sadness as we saw the tragic passing of Phil O’Donnell and Tommy Burns. It was also the campaign where Gretna declined as rapidly as they rose, ending in liquidation just six years after being elected into the Scottish Football League. The guys have fun recalling their memories of 2007/8, a season that turned out to be a false dawn rather than the start of something good for Scottish Football.
