Hi, welcome to Cereal Sisters, a podcast where my sister and I tell each other true crime stories. My name is Kristin. And I'm Fauna. And before Devana tells me a story, I do have a quick correction.
I know in the last episode, I said Marilyn Manson. I met Charles Manson. Devana knew I met Charles Manson, because she agreed with me and she didn't correct me. So I know.
No, not at all. No, I know. I'm stupid. We knew what we meant.
Just can't say it. Words are hard. We shouldn't have a podcast. There's no internet to stop us though.
So Devana has a story for me this week. All right. So we're in school are slowly draining all the life out of me. So I pretty much, I just re-watched one of my favorite I survived the other night.
So it's episode nine of season two. And I wanted to tell you this story actually for a long time. So my laziness was like perfect timing. So the whole episode is so crazy.
And there's two other stories on it actually that I'm not telling you, but that I want to kind of revisit maybe in the future. But another note that the only frustrating part was that I couldn't find a lot of research online about Sabre. So it's about Sabre's survival story. And I couldn't find a ton of stuff about her.
You're basically just getting me retelling the episode. But she is the bad ass I want to be. So in July of 2004 in Miami, Florida, which like where else? So Sabre is, no, oh, Florida.
So she is working as a propane delivery driver, so she's filling up gas tanks at people's homes. And one day she's told to make a delivery off her normal route. She backs up to the house so she can pull the hose down the driveway. But for some reason, she's sitting in the truck and she glanced up and noticed a guy crossing the street diagonally right in front of her truck.
And she says that it was not less than 10 to 15 front, 10 to 15 feet in front of her. And then he stops in front of her and they meet at their eyes, meet for a second. And so like Sabre thinks like fuck this and she decides not to get out of the truck until he's gone. Big call.
Yeah, which is like, we don't. So this whole time she's so smart so she stays in the truck and she notices that he turns around and he goes back the same way that he came. So she thinks that this is odd but she tells herself that she's probably just being paranoid, which is like you're never just being paranoid. So but she still stays in the truck until he disappears around the corner.
She finishes some paperwork in the truck and thinks she's in the clear to start her delivery. She says that she remembers that she walked backwards up the driveway, which she never does. Like she was just like trying to talk about this. Yeah.
Yeah. So normally she just slings the hose over her shoulder and like works about the driveway. Yeah. But she was just feeling creeped up enough that I creeped out enough that she walks up backwards and even the whole time she's like telling herself she's being silly, but she's like at the same time, like we're gonna walk up backwards.
Yeah. So she gets to the tank and she connects the hose. She flips the switch to let the propane start filling, but then she feels an hour around her neck. Oh shit.
Yeah. So she gets picked up in the air and she slams the back of the house. Oh fuck. She realizes that someone is choking her.
So she tries to reach around and get a hold of the person attacking her, but she can't get to them like no matter what she tries. She starts to lose her breath and starts to feel like she's losing consciousness. And it's one of the saddest parts of the episode when she describes this part of it. She says that it's like a seashell noise in your ear.
Oh fuck. Like she says that like a bunch of times she's like this seashell noise that you just hear. It's just like when you put a seashell up your ear. It's the blood rushing past.
Exactly. Yeah. That's awful. Like you know, so she hears like the humming and her vision starts to tunnel and she thinks to herself that like this is not what she thought was gonna happen today and like this is, you know, not at all what she had planned and it's not happening not today.
But she still can't breathe and she blacks out. So the next thing she remembers, she thought she was laying in bed. She thought she was leaving her work because she kept hearing this voice yelling in her ear. Get up.
But she couldn't see. So finally she realizes that she's not home in bed. She's looking at the back of the house. The same house.
Huh? The same house. The same house. Yeah, the same house.
So it just like comes to and she peeks out of the corner of her eye and she sees the guy who crossed her front of her truck earlier. And at this point, he straddled on top of her going through this like fanny pack that she has. And her first reaction without even thinking about it is to grab the guy by his balls as hard as he can. Damn.
Go her. And it's such a go her moment, but it's kind of funny like in the episode because she doesn't really want to say like the word that loud. Yeah. But like she finally says testicles while she's making like the hand gestures of grabbing them.
So like this whole time, you're just like, lady, you are fucking awesome. And she even says that she thinks, oh no, like he's wearing baggy shorts. I hope I reached out high enough. But of course, this just like pisses him off even like more, as you can imagine.
Yeah. So he goes around her and she's in a seated position at this time with like her legs out in front of her and he's lifting her off the ground and dropping her. Oh shit. Like he's got her arm around his neck, her neck and she realizes the son of a bitch is trying to snap her neck.
Oh fuck. So she's hanging on to both of his arms for dear life and he just keeps lifting her up and dropping her back down, trying to snap her neck. Fuck me. So the only thing that goes through her mind at this point is just to play dead, like just play dead, play dead.
And she says that she did it so exaggeratedly that she couldn't believe that he fell for it. Like community theater type shit where yeah, she's like, I'm dead. She's exhales loudly and goes limp, but it works. He finally lets up a little bit, like just enough of her to take her chance.
She slides over to the right shoulder, like his right shoulder and bides down as hard as she can. And at the same time, she also reaches up and sticks her fingers and his eyes and rakes his whole face. Good. And then she says that she, her finger ends up in his mouth, which, and then she thinks that he's bitten it off because she can't feel the end of it anymore.
But then suddenly they're on their feet and they're struggling again and he throws her against the back of the house, puts his arm around his neck and just starts wailing on her. So at this point, he's broken her nose, he shattered her knee cap, but at this point, she doesn't feel anything. No, pure adrenaline is just keeping her going. Like, pure, like, I'm just going to win, I'm going to live.
And so she remembers that she stops for a split second and looks her right in the eye and says, give me the fucking money. So Sabri is carrying almost $1,000 in her pocket from her deliveries. And her response, because she's pissed and she's a badass, is just looking right in the eye and say, you know what? Fuck you.
Pup. On the one hand, like, go hurt. That's fucking awesome. On the other hand.
I don't think I love my job that much. I know. I mean, that would just give him the money. You got it.
Not my money. Right. But at this point, I think she's just like, this is personal. Yeah.
Yeah. That I could. So the fight continues and she's trying to block his punches and trying to punch him back. And then, like, she finally realized that there's a door next to her that she hadn't noticed before.
And she also didn't know that there had been people in the house the whole time. Oh, shit. They're just watching? The whole time.
This has been going on. I mean, like, I'm sure, you know, this is just, like, minutes, really, but it's time. But finally, the woman inside opens the door and she's dealing on the phone. Like, he's going to kill her.
He's killing her. Yeah. So the, like, the asshole grabs the front of Sabri's shorts and rips down. And the money has been stuck into a bank envelope and was, like, in a neat little package.
And it flies up in the air, like, in slow motion. And her and the guy are both watching it. Oh fuck. Right.
Like reaches in the air and she slaps it. And where does it land? The woman on the phone, it lands right on her chest. Nice.
So that lady runs back in the house and, of course, the attacker is done with Sabri at this point. Yeah. He just wants the money. He just wants the money.
So he runs in after the lady of the house. And instead of running off to get police or get help, our girl runs inside after both of them. Oh, fuck. Go over her.
But damn. No doubt. I'm going to. She does not give up.
He's like, no, fuck you. You're fucking dead. I'm going to murder you. Fuck.
I'm going to see this room to the end. Damn. And by the time she catches up to them, he's got the lady of the house by the neck and he's shouting like to give him the money. But she gives no bucks and she punches him between his arms and hits and brain and the chin.
So hard that she hears his feet clacked together. Good. Oh, and the lady that lives in the house, she is on the loan. There's also a couple of teenagers there in the house as well.
And one of the teenagers is on the phone and she opens the front door and starts yelling at him to get out. The police are coming. Get out. So Sabri remembers that him like grabbing his shirt and wiping his face and started to walk up the driveway and he's wearing at them, like, taunting them.
But he does take off. He just like goes. Just like, holy shit. Quick side question.
It's Florida. Where are the guns? Does nobody in this house have a gun to pull on this dude that might murder her? It's sure doesn't seem like it.
I mean, it's Florida. It's even like a stand your ground state, isn't it? Yeah. You have it on your property threatening you.
You get to shoot him and it's legal. Yeah. Yup. I don't know.
So it's just like this crazy attack and then finally like he just leaps, right? So the cops finally show up and they catch the guy two blocks away. So they catch him and she's taken to identify the suspect and she walks right up to him and looks him in the face and says, remember my face? Remember this face because I'm going to be your worst nightmare.
Oh, fuck. I'm going to come to every court hearing you are ever brought to. She says, I'm going to be there. I'm going to be your worst nightmare from this day forward.
Do the balls on this woman. Like, she is just like, I'm going to get you. Fuck you. You're going down.
How could you do this to me? So in the end, Sabri suffered a broken nose, a shattered kneecap, bruises, cuts and bites. And the worst part is that he was HIV positive. Oh, shit.
So she had to keep going back for the test. And she just like hated that he still had control over her for so long. Yeah. But luckily, no, she never came up positive.
And then her attacker, Ronald Hallaway, had just gotten out of prison after serving 18 years for armed robbery and murder and then he was sentenced to another 20 years for his attack on Sabri. Good. In the end, when she was asked why she thought she survived, she says, I survived because it was either going to be him or me and it wasn't going to be me. Damn.
Like, it's just one of my favorite survival stories. Like she fought so hard and she just did it with such like attitude. Like I cannot even imagine that I would react that calmly or not calmly, but just like still be able to make and keep your head and actually win. Yeah.
And I would just like turn, turn into someone who would just be like, haven't ever you won? Because I want to stay alive. Yeah. Like the thing that frustrated me so much about this one was that like she's just trying to do her job.
Right? It's not even like her fault. It's just she happens to be there and it's not even regular route. It has nothing to do with her.
And like, I've always been so wary of solitary jobs and you know, jobs where you have to work alone because like that's the scariest thing to me is like, you're just at work and then you are not all of a sudden. So when I used to in Reno work for that guy, cleaning antiques and stuff, he would have me know and clean the antiques in the storage units and he would leave me there. Oh, I'm 18, 19 years old, just hanging out at a storage unit all by myself in the middle of the downtown Las Vegas. Dude, it was pretty sketchy.
Yeah. No, that is not cool. Uh huh. Like when I worked for a vet in Southern Oregon and he would leave before closing if there were any appointments on the book.
So like, you know, if there weren't any appointments after 2 to 30, he would just leave. Oh fuck. But I still had to be there to answer the phones until we closed at 5.30. So sometimes I would be there for like three hours alone and then when I worked that subway and we moved here, I was alone for usually an hour until like 11 o'clock at night if the graveyard guy was on time.
Oh fuck. And like, that was the one I really hated because we were right next to a bar and we shared an alleyway with them and there have been drunk guys that had like walked in the back of the subway before. Uh huh. And like the graveyard guy always thought I'd be to leave the back door unlocked, but and then he would complain that I always locked it.
Well, yeah. Fuck him. And I was just like, no, fuck you. I'm blocking that door.
Walk your ass around. Yeah. It's just, oh my gosh. Yeah.
I don't know. Like I don't know how to like get around people working alone, but it just seems so unsafe. Mm hmm. But anyway, that is that story.
That's nuts. She's awesome. If I had to survive through the zombie apocalypse, I want to be with her. Me too.
I'd rather die in the first wave. But if I make it through, we need to go find her. I want her on my side. I think we have to go to Florida though.
Yeah. I know. Florida. Thanks for listening.
