The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) is commemorating Malaria Day, observed annually on the 6th of November, to create awareness about the mosquito borne disease. Sub-Saharan Africa carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden, with 89 per cent of malaria cases recorded in the region in 2015. Scientists believe that a gene-drive, which is also endorsed by the African Union, could be a transformative tool towards malaria eradication. However, the proposed gene-drive is not without criticism, with concerns that this latest form of genetic engineering poses environmental and health threats. To unpack the controversy around the gene drive here's the Director of the African Centre for Biodiversity, Mariam Mayet. talking to Zikhona Miso.
