Safavid Empire

In this episode, we explore the Safavid Empire, a transformative Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and laid many of the foundations of the modern Iranian state. Emerging from a Sufi religious order, the Safavids rose to power under Shah Ismail I, who unified Iran and made Twelver Shi’ism the official state religion, reshaping the region’s political and religious identity. We examine the reigns of key rulers such as Shah Tahmasp and Shah Abbas I, whose military and administrative reforms strengthened the empire amid ongoing conflicts with the Ottoman and Uzbek empires. The episode also looks at internal struggles between the Qizilbash Turkoman tribes, Persian bureaucrats, and the growing influence of Caucasian slave-soldiers, while highlighting the Safavids’ lasting cultural and architectural achievements.
