from The Madelyn Moon Show (Previously Mind Body Musings) · host Maddy Moon

Episode 221: Sahara Rose is the best-selling author of the Idiot's Guide to Ayurveda (Penguin Random House) and has been called “a leading voice for the millennial generation into the new paradigm shift” by Deepak Chopra. She is a 27-year-old Certified Ayurvedic, Holistic and Sports Nutritionist, wellness blogger and host of the Highest Self Podcast. Sahara's mission is to awaken people of their innate potential so they can share their gifts and fulfill their purpose on this planet. Show notes: Sahara's personal story on spirituality and why she hid from it for years. How yoga opened up a whole new world for her. What being infertile and going through menopause at age 21 taught her. What is Ayurveda? The brutal digestive process she went through after she starting eating better. “Once you’ve healed your body, you realize you’re so much more than your body.” “Health is just the predecessor to be able to do the things I want to do in life. My life is not focused about being healthy. I hope I don’t even have to think about that so I can live my life and fulfill my darma.” According to Ayurveda, there is not one diet or herb that works for everyone. “Food is ⅕ of your overall health.” What is a dosha? The 3 Ayurvedic doshas: Vata (air), Pitta (fire), Kapha (earth). How to determine your specific dosha. The physical and mental characteristics of each type, as well as your body type and what you should eat. Vata: means “to move,” can be a little spacey if not in balance, are creative and free-flowing. Pitta: the most sensitive of all of the doshas, known for getting things done, should avoid spicy foods. Kapha: stable like the earth, the most likely dosha to become depressed, needs to know how to speak up and adapt to change. If you have excess Vata, take out raw foods. If you have excess Pitta, decrease spicy foods. If you have excess Kapha, decrease dairy and carbs. There are 6 tastes in Ayurveda: pungent, sweet, salty, sour, bitter, astringent. Sweet Foods: sweet potatoes, avocados, butternut squash, quinoa. Sour Foods: lemon, vinegar. Salty Foods : celery, sea vegetables, sea salt. Sour foods: leafy greens. Pungent Foods: turmeric, ginger, garlic. Astringent Foods: beans, lentils, cranberries, pomegranates. An example of what Sahara eats for lunch every day. Her favorite sweetener: liquid monkfruit Why you should remove sweeteners, including Stevia, from your diet. “You’re not given a dream if you don’t have the capacity to make it happen.” Must read books: Shit Your Ego Says by James McCrae, Shantaram by David Gregory Roberts, Break the Norms by Chandresh Bhwardwaj Must attend festival: http://zorbathebuddha.org/festivals/ Connect with Sahara: Website Order her {new!} book Eat Feel Fresh: A Contemporary, Plant-Based Ayurvedic Cookbook Instagram Facebook YouTube Podcast Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
