Saint Alban was the first Christian martyr in Britain, living in the city of Verulamium during a time of persecution. He sheltered a Christian priest named Amphibalus, which led to his own conversion and eventual martyrdom. Despite being arrested and tortured for his faith, Saint Alban remained steadfast.
