Saint John of the Cross | The Dark Night of the Soul – A noite escura da alma

“In a dark night, / With anxious love inflamed, / Oh, happy chance!”Arrested and tortured for his beliefs, during his time in prison Saint John of the Cross experienced a spiritual awakening. The Spanish carmelite friar and Christian mystic outpoured his words of encouragement and longing for union with God in mystical poetry and writings. He died in the late-sixteenth century and was canonized in 1726. Considered one the most important poets in Spanish literature, his works have been widely translated. Recently, Vasant Swaha shared his reading of “The Dark Night of the Soul”, one of the most famous poems by Saint John of the Cross. In his talk, the Master expresses how this is an expression used by mystics meaning the process of going through inner darkness while finding the way back to meet with the Maker. It is a twilight zone, a purgatory, or the “happy chance” which every human being is given while letting go of the old and welcoming a whole new life, realizing their true Self, free from the identification with the body, with the mind.Vasant Swaha is a modern mystic sharing his love, joy, and wisdom in retreats.
