Saint Luke the Evangelist - Fr. Micah - October 18, 2020

from Holy Trinity + Holy Cross - Sermons · host Holy Trinity + Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral

Today in Orthodoxy we celebrate the feast day of Saint Luke the Evangelist. Father Micah shares with us that Saint Luke the Evangelist and apostle was unique among the New Testament figures, because he was not of the Hebrew people but Greco – Syrian by birth. Saint Luke was highly educated, a doctor, an artist and tradition tells us that he was the first to paint an Icon of the Theotokos as well as the Apostles. He was a friend, physician and disciple of Saint Paul. He wrote the largest Gospel and the book of Acts, which if combined account for a quarter of the New Testament. Saint Luke was educated and wrote his Gospel in Greek. His Gospel contains the parable of The Prodigal Son, Saint Simeon holding the Christ child in his arms and the story of the two disciples who walked on the road to Emmaus, all of which are uniquely attributed to Saint Luke.
