Saladin and the Hospital: A Treaty of Tolerance in Jerusalem

After the fall of Jerusalem in 1187, Saladin allowed the Hospital of St. John to remain and care for pilgrims, a decision rooted in Islamic law and pragmatism. This episode explores the negotiations between Saladin and the Hospitallers, the role of the Order's master Garnier de Nablus, and how the treaty reflected Saladin's vision of a multi-faith Jerusalem. We discuss the terms of surrender, the protection of Christian institutions, and the legacy of this arrangement as a model for coexistence during the Crusades. Drawing on accounts from Imad ad-Din al-Isfahani and Ibn al-Athir, we examine the political and religious calculations behind Saladin's mercy. #Saladin #Hospitallers #Jerusalem #1187 #TreatyOfJerusalem #GarnierDeNablus #ImadAdDin #IbnAlAthir #StJohn #Crusades #Ayyubid #IslamicLaw #Coexistence #Pilgrimage #Hospital #MedievalHistory #History #FexingoHistory #AyyubidDynasty #MedievalMiddleEast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
