Saladin the Unifier: Forging an Empire from Chaos

from Saladin: The Muslim Leader Who Defeated Crusaders — Fexingo History · host Fexingo

Before Saladin defeated the Crusaders at Hattin, before he recaptured Jerusalem, he had to build an empire from scratch. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore Saladin's early rise to power—how a Kurdish commander in the service of Nur ad-Din seized control of Egypt, outmaneuvered the Fatimid caliphate, and navigated the treacherous politics of the Sunni-Shia divide. They examine the Siege of Cairo in 1168, the dissolution of the Fatimid state in 1171, and Saladin's controversial consolidation of power through family appointments and military campaigns against fellow Muslims. Along the way, they discuss Saladin's use of propaganda, his reliance on the asabiyyah concept of tribal solidarity, and the brutal logic behind his suppression of the Assassins. This episode reveals the lesser-known, bloody pragmatism behind the legend of the chivalrous sultan. #Saladin #Ayyubid #Fatimid #NurAdDin #Egypt #CairoSiege #SunniShiaSplit #Asabiyyah #Assassins #KurdishHistory #MedievalIslam #Crusades #FexingoHistory #History #MiddleEastHistory #EmpireBuilding #ThirdCrusade #SalahAdDin #AyyubidDynasty #MedievalMiddleEast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
