Saladin's Forgotten Mapmakers: The Geographers of the Ayyubid Court

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the unsung heroes of Saladin's reign: the cartographers and geographers who mapped the Middle East and shaped his military campaigns. From the detailed itineraries of Ibn Jubayr to the scholarly works of al-Idrisi, we uncover how maps, travel accounts, and geographical knowledge were as crucial as swords and sieges. Learn how Saladin's court at Cairo and Damascus collected and used geographic intelligence, from the Nile's flood patterns to the caravan routes of the Hijaz, and how this knowledge helped him outmaneuver the Crusader states. We also touch on the legacy of these mapmakers, whose work influenced both Islamic and European cartography for centuries. This is a fresh angle on Saladin's world, focusing on the quiet intellectual infrastructure that supported his victories. #Saladin #Ayyubid #Geography #Cartography #IbnJubayr #al-Idrisi #MiddleEast #Crusades #Damascus #Cairo #Nile #Hijaz #RedSea #CaravanRoutes #MedievalMaps #History #FexingoHistory #Intelligence Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
