Saladin's Physicians: Medicine and Healing in the Ayyubid Court

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the world of medicine in Saladin's Ayyubid sultanate. They uncover how the sultan's court in Cairo and Damascus became unlikely centers of healing, boasting hospitals that predated and outshone their European counterparts. Learn about the legendary physician Ibn Maymun (Maimonides), who served as Saladin's personal doctor while writing influential medical texts. Discover the practical medicine of the era—treatments for battle wounds, herbal remedies, and the role of surgery. The conversation also touches on public health measures, including the establishment of hospitals like the Nasiri in Cairo, and how Muslim medical knowledge, built on Greek and Persian traditions, influenced the wider medieval world. #Saladin #AyyubidMedicine #IbnMaymun #Maimonides #MedievalHospitals #Cairo #Damascus #Bimaristan #Surgery #Bloodletting #HumoralTheory #Galen #Avicenna #Crusades #MiddleAges #History #FexingoHistory #MedicineHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
