Saladin's Secret Weapon: The Postal Pigeons

Before the internet, before the telegraph, there was the pigeon. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore how Saladin harnessed the ancient art of pigeon post to coordinate his far-flung Ayyubid empire and outmaneuver the Crusaders. From the bustling dovecotes of Cairo and Damascus to the dusty towers of Aleppo, they trace the logistics behind the legend. Learn about the qal'a, the fortified pigeon towers that dotted the landscape; the bred homing pigeons that could fly hundreds of miles in a day; and the messengers who decoded their tiny scrolls. Discover how Saladin's competitors, from the Assassins to Richard the Lionheart, tried to counter this feathered intelligence network. Was it really the secret weapon that helped him win the Battle of Hattin and retake Jerusalem? Tune in for the story of feathered couriers, medieval signal codes, and the surprising science of avian navigation. #Saladin #PigeonPost #AyyubidEmpire #Crusades #Hattin #Jerusalem #MedievalHistory #MilitaryHistory #SignalCorps #PigeonTowers #MiddleEast #BirdMessengers #History #FexingoHistory #LucasAndLuna #SecretWeapon #SiegeWarfare #MedievalInnovation Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
