Sales Strategies from the Sun King: Lessons from Banana Boat’s Success | CEO Sales Huddle with Che Brown

from CEO Sales Huddle with Che Brown · host chebrown

Meet Robert Bell, who started his career as a lifeguard in Miami Beach. Back then, he noticed that many suncare products were not really safe or effective. There was a huge need for suncare products that could truly protect people, but the available options just didn’t cut it. People needed better products and a brand they could trust to keep their skin safe under the sun. Robert wasn’t just a lifeguard, he was also a keen observer. While working as a pool boy, he kept seeing the same problem over and over: people using bad sun products and getting sunburned. He knew there had to be a better way. After he got his marketing degree, he took on a big challenge—starting the Banana Boat brand from scratch. And here’s an interesting fact: his idea was to make a sunscreen with SPF 23 when most sunscreens were only SPF 15. This idea came around the same time President Reagan had skin cancer! With his newfound knowledge of the “4 Ps” of marketing—Product, Price, Place, and Promotion—Robert went to work. He discovered a fifth “P”—People, and built a strong team to help make Banana Boat a trusted name. He also knew that good promotions could boost sales. By having famous people like Miss USA 1986 and Olympic diver Greg Louganis use his products, everyone wanted to try Banana Boat. After 15 years of hard work, Robert sold Banana Boat for a huge amount of money. Even after that, he didn’t stop; he took another old suncare brand, Sea & Ski, and brought it back to life. My Big Takeaway: The big lesson from Robert Bell’s story is the importance of having a strong sales system. Robert never stopped focusing on his five “Ps” of marketing and added his own twist with People. This helped him build not just products, but brands that people loved and trusted. His success shows that with the right approach, you can grow your business, make a big impact, and also help protect people’s health. Stay Hungry. Stay Humble.
