Salt & Light - (Matthew 5:13-20)

from Sermons at The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour · host The Very Rev Canon Eric Metoyer

A part of the Sermon on the Mount - Salt & Light; Fulfillment of the Law

(Fifth Sunday after Epiphany - The Very Rev Canon Eric Metoyer) In Matthew 5:13-20, a part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses two metaphors to describe the essential role of Christians in the world: Salt & Light, which Rev Metoyer explains and encourages us to recall and embody in these trying times. He retells the story of St Absalom Jones, the first Episcopal African-American priest and reminds us to continue to bear witness to his example of "saltiness" in preserving society from moral decay and intentionally embodying the light of God in ourselves and for each other. He closes connecting this concept of Light and God's Law with the principle of interconnectedness and community called "Ubuntu", described by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu as the notion that an individual's humanity is inextricably linked to the humanity of everyone else; "I am because we are" or "a person is a person through other persons".
