WEEKEND:Salvation Army Plans Major Greenville Expansion — But Needs Help (Ep 816)

from Joey Hudson / Just The Truth · host Joey Hudson

Just the Truth Podcast with Joey Hudson Greenville is growing at an incredible pace — but that growth is also creating challenges many people never see. The Salvation Army of Greenville is undertaking a major campaign called “Rebuilding Hope, Restoring Lives” to transform its aging Rutherford Street campus and dramatically increase its ability to serve people experiencing homelessness. I sit down with Major Michael Harris, Area Commander for the Salvation Army serving Greenville, Pickens and Oconee counties, to discuss the proposed new Center of Hope, why the current facilities can no longer meet the community's needs, and why homelessness increasingly includes families and people who are working but still can't afford a place to live. The proposed project would increase shelter capacity from 93 to 143 beds, provide additional transitional housing, improve security and accessibility, and create accommodations designed to help keep families together. We also discuss the fundraising challenge. The Salvation Army has raised millions toward the project, but still needs the community's help to get across the finish line and begin construction. Major Harris also explains how the Salvation Army's Christian mission goes beyond providing someone with a bed for the night — focusing on helping people rebuild their lives and ultimately become self-sufficient.
