Same House, Same Heat Pump, Two Very Different Nervous Systems

from The Human Diagnostic

The blower was making a sound like a playing card in bicycle spokes, and the woman in her kitchen had one hand flat against her chest. It was the first week of August, ninety-nine degrees by two in the afternoon. A brick ranch on the edge of a small Oklahoma town, the kind with a carport and a good pecan tree. The house had been climbing since morning. It was eighty-three inside when I got there. The homeowner had called early, and I was three calls behind by the time I pulled in. I will be honest about that, because it matters. I was hot, I was running late, and I walked through her door already talking. I said something like, "Probably the capacitor, those go all the time. Let me get on the roof." I was looking at my phone while I said it. She asked, "Is that noise bad?" I said, "Eh, it's just making noise." I meant it as comfort. It did not land as comfort. Her face changed. She started telling me everything the house had done for two days. A click around four in the morning. A smell for about a minute on Tuesday. The vent in the hall that felt weaker than the others. She had noticed all of it, and she had been carrying all of it. I stopped. It was not wisdom. I just realized I was standing in the middle of her kitchen, sweating on her floor, and she was reading every inch of me. So I set my bag down. I said, "Let me tell you what I'm going to do, in order. First I'm going to look at the outdoor unit and test one part. Then I'm going to listen to that blower up close. Whatever I find, I will come tell you what it is, and what it will cost, before I touch anything else." Her shoulders came down about two inches. She went and got me a glass of water. It was the same sound, the same house, and the same tech. The only thing that changed was how I walked in. Core line: "The second piece of obvious advice is to toughen up the customer, or to treat them as a problem to get through."
