Sampson’s Fit Over Fame Philosophy

Houston Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson is doubling down on culture and player fit, even as he navigates a transfer-heavy roster after losing four starters to the pros. He’s brought in four portal recruits—Dedan Thomas Jr., Corey Hadnot II, Delrecco Gillespie, and Braden East—who align with his system and values. Sampson stresses loyalty to returning players like J’Wan Roberts, the program’s all-time leader, and insists the portal isn’t a free-for-all. His philosophy? If a player doesn’t thrive here, they’re better off elsewhere—because the right fit keeps the Cougar culture strong and the future bright.
