There are two baptisms mentioned in the scriptures: the baptism of water and the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost. When John the Baptist went out to preach baptism to the Jews, he said, “I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.” (Luke 3:16) Joseph Smith also spoke of both these baptisms: The gospel requires baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, which is the meaning of the word in the original language–namely, to bury or immerse. *** You might as well baptize a bag of sand as a man, if not done in view of the remission of sins and getting of the Holy Ghost. Baptism by water is but half a baptism, and is good for nothing without the other half–that is, the baptism of the Holy Ghost. The Savior says, “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (TPJS, p. 314)
