Sandhill's Dock Report: DockHounds Get Edged by Kansas City Monarchs 2–6 | 2026-08-12
from The Prairie Score: Sandhill's Lake Country Baseball Breakdown · host The Sandhill Engine
Out on the dock tonight, the water's flat and the sky's doing that slow bruise thing before a storm... but the damage was already done before the first beer got warm. Five runs in the first inning. Five. Like a foundation poured on a frost heave — looked fine from the parking lot, but the cracks were already running before the paint dried. The DockHounds spent the next eight innings trying to build a house on a busted slab. They almost did. Almost. You're listening to Sandhill's Dock Report from Louie's Dock — Lake Country baseball, filed from the marsh. I'm the Sandhill. Tonight: a first-inning flood, a seventh-inning spark, and the quiet arithmetic of a four-run loss. Now the first inning... that was a five-run wave that came over the dock before anybody had their boots on. Trey Riley took the ball, and Kansas City treated it like a piñata at a county fair. Six hits total for the Monarchs on the night... and five of them landed in that opening frame. The damage was done by the time the shoreline settled. But here's what's interesting. After that flood, the levee held. Innings two through eight — nothing. Goose eggs stacked like cordwood. The pitching settled into that long, horizontal line Frank Lloyd Wright loved — low, stable, reaching for the horizon. You could almost forget the scoreboard. Almost. And neither side gave an inch on defense. Clean gloves, both dugouts. Then came the seventh. Two home runs — back-to-back blasts, or close enough to feel like it — and suddenly the old place had some load-bearing hope in its bones. Two runs on two swings. That's the thing about a good frame — it don't matter how deep the crack runs in the first act... if the bones are true, the house still talks back. But the Monarchs answered with one more in the ninth — a courtesy tap on the hull — and the DockHounds ran out of shoreline.Seven hits to six. They out-hit 'em. But baseball don't score points for decoration... it scores for load-bearing moments. And the heaviest load landed in the first. What does tonight tell us? The DockHounds' pitching took a punch in round one, then threw eight rounds of shutout leather — that's real. Endersby earned his win, but the arms after Riley showed a prairie-grade flatness: low, steady, no wasted motion. And the bats... seven hits, two of 'em over the fence. The offense isn't broken. It's just slow to fire. If that first inning gets tamed, this is a different night on the water. You know how a bobber sits quiet for an hour, then jolts like a frog hit the line? That was this game. The DockHounds slept through the sunrise, woke up swinging in the seventh, and by the time they had their hooks sharpened... the boat was already docked. Four runs is a lot of lake to paddle back across.
