Tonight: a three-run lead got just enough wind in its sails to drift away, one run at a time. The Game in the Waters started with DockHounds bats scratching out splinters in the fourth — two runs on a pair of singles, a walk, and a Milwaukee error that left the door cracked. That was the load-bearing frame... a 2-0 perch on the lake. Then in the sixth they added another single, another run, and it looked like the roof was pitched solid at 3-1. But the Milkmen started banging on the sill. A run in the sixth off a leadoff double and a sac fly — that's just a draft through the window. Then in the eighth, a solo homer — that's a crack in the plaster. And in the ninth, with two outs and a man on... This is the kind of collapse Frank Lloyd Wright warned against: vertical ambition without a proper tie to the earth. Two runs came home on a walk-off single, and the whole house fell in.
