SANDRA CANTU Walked Past the Camera and Vanished.. The Case That Shattered a California Community
from You Can't Unhear · host Ericka Cuevas
On March 27, 2009, eight-year-old Sandra Cantu disappeared while looking for friends inside her mobile-home community in Tracy, California. Surveillance footage captured her walking near her home shortly before she vanished, launching one of Northern California’s largest missing-child searches. Ten days later, Sandra was found inside a suitcase recovered from an irrigation pond. Investigators soon focused on Melissa Huckaby, a Sunday school teacher whose daughter was one of Sandra’s closest friends. In this episode of You Can’t Unhear, we reconstruct Sandra’s final afternoon, the FBI-assisted search, the anonymous note that pointed toward the water, and the physical and handwriting evidence that tied Huckaby to the crime. Huckaby ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with the special circumstance of kidnapping and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Her motive has never been conclusively established.
