Welcome back to Midnight Movie Distillery where we watch the movies you've heard about… and drink the whiskey that helps us reckon with the ancient evil under the church. Tonight we're reviewing Prince of Darkness — the middle film of John Carpenter's self-described Apocalypse Trilogy, sandwiched between The Thing (1982) and In the Mouth of Madness (1995), which we reviewed a few weeks back on August 12. Donald Pleasence's Priest inherits an ancient canister of swirling green liquid in the basement of an abandoned Los Angeles church. He calls in Victor Wong's Prof. Birack and a team of graduate-student scientists to study it, and they unseal what turns out to be pure primordial anti-matter — Satan, essentially, as a subatomic physics problem. Alice Cooper cameos as a homeless zombie and commits a memorable murder with his own personal stage-prop bike. Filmed for $3M in 30 days as Carpenter's return to indie filmmaking after big-studio disappointments. Shot by Gary B. Kibbe — the same DP as In the Mouth of Madness. Same producer, same recurring Carpenter cast members. You'll also hear us referring back to Hungry, our episode from last week — that was recorded right before this one, so some callbacks slipped in.
