Estos últimos, son la llamada basura espacial, una amenaza para los satélites que viaja a 28000 kilómetros por hora. Para reparar los daños ocasionados en los satélites (ya sea por la basura espacial o por otros motivos), la NASA está desarrollando unos robots que viajen al espacio y los reparen, además de abastecerlos con gasolina. Esto permitiría una mayor vida útil y más tiempo para hacer mediciones Poco a poco, se están desarrollando nuevos satélites y sistemas de observación más precisos y pequeños. Así, el ejército estadounidense está desarrollando espías del tamaño de un mosquito, mientras que ingenieros en todo el mundo trabajan en nuevos satélites con una resolución de hasta 15 centímetros. Y no solo se están desarrollando para observar la Tierra, sino también el espacio. El satélite Gaia permitirá hacer un mapa en tres dimensiones de la Vía Láctea, recogiendo datos de más de 1000 estrellas. Y todo esto gracias a científicos como Jordi Torra y Xavier Luri, astrónomos implicados en el mapeo de la Vía Láctea; como José Luis Casanova, físico que analiza las imágenes de los satélites; o como Juan José Ramos, que construye minisatélites para investigación.
