Al finalizar la gira europea Marley partió con su banda para los Estados Unidos. Bob hizo dos shows en el Madison Square Garden, pero luego, repentinamente su cuello quedó rígido y se quedó mudo. Lo llevaron al hotel Essex en donde estaban alojados y pudo recuperarse circunstancialmente. A pesar de los consejos médicos, decidió presentarse al día siguiente en el Teatro Stanley de Pitsburgh. Aquella actuación del 23 de septiembre de 1980 fue su último recital.
