Dr. Shaunna and Dr. Lisa quickly whiplash from funny to not funny in this week's episode. A satirical mockumentary attempting to discredit DEI, Tyreek Hill's unfortunately familiar police stop, and the public health risks of social media are priorities in this week's conversation.Word of the Week [2:55]: Decentering Whiteness: If you are white, it may be hard to accept that most U.S. constructs have focused and prioritized whiteness over representation. Dr. Lisa provides a definition for an oft misunderstood word.Phase 1 [8:55]: "Am I Racist?": Dr. Lisa and a friend accidentally found themselves in a mockumentary that was unexpected. Grappling with race, white guilt, overwhelm, and unethical interviews techniques, the film challenged the pair to parse through its real intent and how to use the knowledge gained effectively.Phase 2 [27:30]: "What If I Wasn't Tyreek Hill?": The Miami Dolphins wide receiver was forcibly dragged from his car by Miami Dade police -- after being pulled over for speeding / no seat belt -- just a few hours prior to a home game. Dragging domestic violence allegations into the storyline seems to miss the greater point. Was this approach even necessary? Because if Tyreek wasn't NFL star Tyreek, this story might have played out differently.Phase 3 [45:55]: Gen Z and Social Media: A recent Harris Poll survey asked Gen Z to quantify how they feel about social media and describe its effects. Public health issues like sleep deprivation, body image distortion, depression, and eating disorders all point to "problematic use." A substantial portion of respondents to the survey wished certain platforms didn't exist. This release of the study is timely given Instagram's new rules for teen account restrictions. Resources mentioned in the show:Good on Paper: How (Not) to Change Someone's MindTyreek Hill’s disturbing detention by police, explained - VoxDolphins star Tyreek Hill had alleged domestic dispute in January, vows to clean up off-field behavior - CBS SportsPolice officer who dragged NFL player Tyreek Hill from car had problem record - The GuardianOpening Statements in Tyre Nichols Trial - NBCJury picked in trial of ex-officers charged in Tyre Nichols killing - WP The Harris Poll on Gen Z and Social MediaGen Z Has Regrets - NYT OpinionNearly half of Gen Zers wish TikTok ‘was never invented,’ survey finds - Fortune
