Now given that so much of my focus on this show has been on issues of social justice and equity you can imagine how intrigued I was with the title of the song. So I downloaded it and to my surprise and delight, through my speakers came the voices of children singing. Wow acirc;euro;ldquo; I decided then and there to put aside the show I was currently working on and instead focus this show, #15, on the children and their song. Station id acirc;euro;ldquo; Allyn Kurin The setting is a small rural community in South-East Kent, where several generations of some local families have attended Selsted Primary School. The school has a student body of approximately 70 Reception or Kindergarten to Year 6 or Sixth Grade students. Early in the summer of 2006, Selsted became one of 12 schools earmarked for closure because of falling pupil numbers in the county. In response The Save Selsted Action Group was formed. As one form of action, a song was written to protest the proposed closure. With lyrics like "Don't close our school, it's been here for many years, my mum and dad both came here too, its closure will mean tears." the children, their parents, teachers and with the help of Steve Howard who produced the song, were able to use music to take stand and send their message out into the world. Not only did Steve act as producer, he also created an indiestore account with 7 Digital to showcase the song where it was and still is available for download for a mere 99p. Hearing of the Selsted plight, Jersey Todd from the Jersey Toddshow in the US, quickly contacted other podcasters, including Adam Curry, the US Podfather and soon Save Our School was being downloaded across the nation and around the world through 7 Digital and the Podsafe Music Network in the US. A recent blog entry from the school reads "To all the podcasters around the world that have taken our small rural school around the world - thanks." They of course also thanked over and over again all of the folks around the globe who helped in some way. When you hear this song, you too will understand what made people want to reach out and help the children of Selsted School. Here now is Save Our School.
