Schmidt Walks, Guardians Miss Out | Cleveland Guardians News

Logan Schmidt, a top-tier high school pitcher with a fastball clocked at 94-97 mph, opted out of signing with the Cleveland Guardians after being drafted in the second round — a move that leaves the team without a high-upside arm for their pipeline this year. The sticking point? Money — Schmidt’s camp demanded a bonus that would’ve pushed the Guardians over MLB’s bonus pool limits. Though the team gambled on his potential, they now face a one-year delay in adding his talent, with Schmidt likely heading to LSU or junior college before re-entering the draft. In compensation, the Guardians will receive a future draft pick around the 60th overall, but it won’t replace the immediate impact they hoped to gain.
