School Grounds Tragedy Unfolds | Spokane News

A 20-year-old man named Joel Malin was shot and killed by a school resource officer outside Evergreen Middle School after deputies responded to a call about a suspicious, possibly armed individual. The officer, also serving as the school’s resource officer, confronted Malin — though details on whether he was actually armed or posed an imminent threat remain unclear. Malin had reportedly left a “suspicious package” on school grounds, which authorities safely removed without confirming its contents. This tragic incident highlights the complex, high-stakes decisions law enforcement faces in school environments — and raises urgent questions about safety protocols and the role of armed officers in schools.
