School shooting barely avoided in Utah; talk to teacher

from Burke Allen's Big Time Talker Podcast — by SpeakerMatch · host Burke Allen

Two Utah high school students were arrested January 25th after authories were tipped off about threatening text messages pointing to a terrorist attack on their school. Police say the teens had plans to bomb Roy High School during an assembly and then make a dramatic airborne getaway.  Most frightening is the fact that authorities say that the two seemingly normal students actually had the ability and resources to pull off their plan. One of the students even wrote a front-page article for his school paper on the mass shootings at Colorado’s Columbine High School and Virginia Tech and what actions were being taken at their own school to prevent a similar incident.   He went so far as to travel from Utah to Colorado to interview the school principal at Columbine, in what authorities now say was likely a fact-finding and discovery mission.   Julie Webb-Townsend, a teacher at the Roy High School in Utah where the near-tragedy was prevented, works with teens everyday both in the classroom and in while doing extensive research for her just released book on teen self-improvement THE TOTALLY AWESOME YOU.  She says that there are specific strategies parents can employ to keep kids safe, and also to make sure their own kids don’t make life-changing mistakes.    Burke Allen will talk with Julie about the mood at Roy High School since the story broke, the 4 most successful teen traits and strategies she uncovered while researching her book, what leads some teens to success even when the odds are stacked so high against them, how to spot the difference between typical teen tantrums and signs that a teen may be heading for serious trouble and much more.  Visit her online at www.juliewebbtownsend.com.
