Scientist Studies Hippie Monkeys for 40 Years Do you like animals? Cats? Dogs? How about… monkeys? One scientist likes northern muriqui monkeys. She likes their cinnamon smell too! She likes to study these monkeys. Northern muriquis are the biggest monkeys in North and South America. They're about 150 centimeters tall. They're about 15 kilograms. Their tails are long and very strong. Their tails help them go from tree to tree. Most monkeys fight. But northern muriquis are very peaceful. They don't fight. They hug each other a lot! People call them "hippie monkeys". The scientist studies these muriquis. But she is trying to save them too. They're in very big danger! (SFX: sound of danger warning) One million northern muriquis lived in forests a long time ago. But people cut down many trees. They wanted to make farms. The forests became smaller and smaller. There are only 1,000 northern muriquis now. People still cut down trees. When forests are too small, there can be no northern muriquis. The scientist has been helping the northern muriquis for 40 years now. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
