Scientists Learn How Butterflies Began

from News For Kids · host ICRT

Guys! There's a butterfly on my nose! *giggle* It tickles! *sneeze* Aa… aa… AAA-CHOO! How many kinds of butterflies are there? Scientists say there are more than 19,000 kinds! Butterflies have lots of beautiful colors. Where did the first butterfly come from? Scientists wanted to know. They went back 100 million years. That's back to dinosaur times… Many kinds of animals were not living yet. There were no dogs. There were no cats. And there were no butterflies. But there were lots and lots of moths. Moths and butterflies are in the same family. But they are very different. Butterflies have lots of bright colors: yellow, blue, green, and more. Most moths do not. That's because moths fly at night. Many are black, brown, or gray. These dark colors help them keep safe. Scientists think a moth didn't like the dark 100 million years ago. It liked the light! It wanted to fly in the bright sunlight! Flying in the sun made the moth's dark colors brighter. Now scientists think that's where the first butterfly came from! A dark moth gave the world beautiful bright butterflies, thanks to the sun! ________________________________ Vocabulary 一億年前的陽光,讓蛾類開始演化成蝴蝶。 1. bright 光亮的 Wow, look at these paintings! The colors are so bright and beautiful! Yeah, it's like they come alive under the sunlight. How many butterflies are there in this painting? I guess at least one hundred. It would look good on a dark wall. The dark wall of our house? This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
