Sclaveni

In this episode, we explore the Sclaveni, the early Slavic tribes who emerged as a major force in the Early Middle Ages through their migrations, raids, and eventual settlement across the Balkans. We examine how Byzantine chroniclers described them as decentralized, warlike, and highly adaptable communities, known for their hospitality, resistance to centralized rule, and skill in guerrilla-style warfare. The episode also traces the rise of the Sclaviniae, the independent Slavic territories that challenged both the Byzantine Empire and the Avar Khaganate, while following the long transition from pagan traditions to Christianization and incorporation into the Byzantine world.
