Scott Slade's Georgia
"It's not just football and pumpkin spice — it's Joro Spider Season in Georgia!" Speaking with UGA Entomology Professor Jason Schmidt about the study he has coauthored on what makes these spiders tick. They have been with us for about a decade, imported from Japan, and lucky us — they thrive in north Georgia, the thinking being it's a climate similar do their native Japan. They tend to build their webs near human infrastructure, they are cold hardy, they are venomous but they are not harmful to humans or pets. They eat pests and largely do not compete with native species. And how they spread so quickly? They can fly. www.jorowatch.org
