Scott Slade's Georgia: 50 Years of the Big Green Egg
90-year-old Ed Fisher still owns the company that started in a strip mall on Buford Highway in Chamblee and is still headquartered in Atlanta. Thousands of self-proclaiming "Egg-heads" will descend on Coolray Field in Gwinnett County this weekend for what they are calling "Eggtoberfest." While they are there cooking up their favorite Big Green Egg recipes they will attempt to break the Guiness world record for the largest serving ever of grilled chicken wings, at least a thousand pounds of them. Current CEO Dan Gertsakov says chicken wings were pivotal to the Big Green Egg's early success; back in the day, Ed Fisher would keep a batch of wings cooking on the sidewalk outside his first store to attract customers, many of whom bought a cooker once they tasted just how good they were as they came off the grill.
