Scouting the Ground
from The Sportsman's Light · host Patrick
August is scouting season. The serious hunter is already in the woods — glassing bean fields at dusk, checking trail cameras, finding the oaks that are dropping. The work done now, weeks before opening day, determines what happens when the season arrives. Success in November is built in August.Jesus taught the same principle about following Him. Count the cost. Sit down first. Estimate what the commitment requires. He was not discouraging followers — He was calling for followers who had done their scouting, who knew what they were signing up for and committed anyway.A faith built on impulse fades when the weather turns. A faith built on counted cost — one that has surveyed the ground, understood the sacrifice, and chosen to follow anyway — holds up in every season. Do the scouting work in your soul now, before the hard seasons come.Prayer:Lord, I don't want a shallow commitment that fades when following You gets costly. Help me count the cost honestly — and choose You anyway.Build in me a faith that is prepared, grounded, and ready for whatever the coming seasons hold. Amen.Challenge:Just as you scout before a hunt, scout your spiritual terrain this week: identify the one area of your life most likely to test your faith in the months ahead, and decide now how you will respond when it does.
