SCP-228-DE ist eine Sofortbildkamera des Herstellers Polaroid, Modell Land Camera 1000, aus dem Jahr 1977. Die mit SCP-228-DE aufgenommen Bilder werden sofort entwickelt, zeigen jedoch nicht direkt das eigentlich fotografierte Objekt. Stattdessen zeigen die Bilder stets die gleiche verschwommene "Verwirbelung" lila-farbener Wellen und Schmierspuren, die zentral zulaufen und eine ovale Form annehmen, die an eine Art Portal erinnert.
