Screwworms Cross Border Into Texas
from Tech News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
A terrifying new threat has landed in South Texas: the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating fly that’s never before crossed into the U.S. from Mexico, was confirmed in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County. These deadly pests lay eggs in open wounds, and their larvae feed on living tissue — a nightmare for livestock. Though eradicated in the U.S. decades ago, saving billions annually, the USDA is now mobilizing a full-scale response, including sterile insect releases, border-wide surveillance, and a new production facility in South Texas to stop this invasive menace before it spreads.
