SCRIPTURE-BASED REPENTANCE AND WARFARE PRAYER: Psalms 79 and 80

Thus we come boldly before the throne of grace, to obtain mercy; and before the Captain of the Armies of God, to petition for holy judgment.  The original text is taken from the KJV, but has been adjusted in modern expression. Additions are marked in capitals.   PSALMS 79 AND 80 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest YOUR PEOPLE like a flock; thou that dwellest IN THE HIGHEST HEAVEN, THAT DWELLS IN OUR SPIRITS, shine forth.  Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.  YOU HAVE COMMANDED THAT WE BE FED with the bread of tears; YOU HAVE giveN US SORROWS AND STRUGGLES to drink in great measure.  Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.  We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.  Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.  How long, Lord ? wilt thou be angry for ever? FORGIVE US OUR SINS OF SELF-CENTERED AND CARELESS IDOLATRY. HOW LONG, LORD, shall thy jealousy burn like fire?  O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily REVIVE us: for we are BEING BROUGHT LOWER AND EVEN LOWER.  Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.  Thou hast brought YOUR CHOSEN PEOPLE out of THE KINGDOM OF DARKNESS: thou hast cast THE DEVIL out OF HEAVEN, and YOU HAVE planted YOUR CHURCH.  Thou preparedst room before YOUR CHURCH, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it HAS filled the WORLD.  BUT WE HAVE BEEN WEAK AND FOOLISH AND GREEDY. OUR WALLS AND HEDGES HAVE BEEN broken down, so that WE HAVE BECOME EASY PICKINGS FOR OUR ENEMIES. Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;  And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.  Let thy hand be upon the PEOPLE of thy right hand, upon YOUR CHILDREN whom thou HAVE COMMANDED TO BE STRONG FOR YOUR NAME'S SAKE.  TURN US, AND GIVE US PURE HEARTS AND CLEAN HANDS, AND will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.  Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. SEE, O God, THAT the CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL HAVE INVADED thine inheritance; thy holy temple have they defiled; they have FILLED YOUR CHURCH WITH MOUNTAINS OF INIQUITY.  The dead bodies of thy MARTYRS have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.  O Lord God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?  Wherefore should the ENEMY say, Where is their God? Pour out thy wrath upon the ENEMY that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.  For they ARE DEVOURING THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE, and THEY ARE LAYING waste THE dwelling place OF YOUR HOLY SPIRIT. LET THE LORD OF OUR HOPE AND THE GOD OF ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants, AND THE BLOOD OF INNOCENTS, which is shed BY THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW YOU. Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to die;  And render unto YOUR ENEMIES sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations, IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.
