SDLP on the Rise Under Claire Hanna | Belfast News

Claire Hanna, new SDLP leader, says her party is on the rise ahead of the May 2027 assembly election, despite shrinking from 24 to just 8 MLAs since power-sharing began. With polls climbing and renewed energy, she vows to push for a “new Ireland” as an anti-sectarian, center-left force — even after a high-profile councillor resigned over their abstention on a statue motion. Hanna insists integrity remains core, and aims to position SDLP as Northern Ireland’s best hope for real change by challenging larger parties’ failures in government.
