In this provocative interview, Clouston responds to arguments made by prominent political commentator Owen Jones and explains why he thinks parts of the modern political left misunderstand the concerns of ordinary voters. Clouston has spent decades involved in British politics and public debate. As leader of the Social Democratic Party, he often argues that the country’s political conversation has become increasingly polarised, with commentators on both sides sometimes talking past each other rather than engaging with real-world issues affecting communities across Britain. In this discussion, Clouston explains why he believes certain political narratives promoted in media and online spaces fail to reflect the experiences of people outside major metropolitan centres. According to him, the gap between elite commentary and everyday concerns has grown wider in recent years — particularly on issues such as culture, national identity, economic opportunity, and community cohesion. But how did this divide emerge in the first place? Clouston argues that part of the problem lies in how political debates are framed. When discussions become dominated by ideological assumptions or rigid labels, he believes it becomes harder to recognise the complexity of real social and economic problems. The result, he suggests, is a political culture where disagreement quickly turns into moral condemnation rather than constructive discussion. Clouston brings decades of political experience to this conversation. He joined the Social Democratic Party in 1982 and spent the 1980s campaigning in elections during a period of intense political change in Britain. By the end of that decade he had already been placed on the SDP’s approved list of parliamentary candidates. His career later included time in the Conservative Party and service as a district councillor in 1999 on Tynedale Council. Today he serves as leader of the Social Democratic Party, having taken the role in 2018 before being re-elected by members in 2020 with overwhelming support. Alongside politics, Clouston is also a writer and commentator. His articles have appeared in publications including The Spectator, spiked, and UnHerd, and he regularly contributes to political discussions in broadcast media. In this interview, he outlines why he believes Britain’s political debate needs more open discussion and fewer assumptions — especially when addressing the complex challenges facing modern society.
