Seagate | Meet the Architect – Data Durability
from Seagate Technology · host SADFER
Serkay Ölmez, a senior staff data scientist and physicist at Seagate, walks us through the ins and outs of data durability and availability—as well as the durability advantages of Lyve Rack, powered by CORTX. Learn more at https://github.com/Seagate/cortx and join us the first Thursday of every month to learn about CORTX from Seagate experts. • Computing data durability and availability in erasure-coded systems is nontrivial. There are various approaches and models for such computations, and the results vary by orders of magnitude from model to model. In this presentation, we review a few of these models and discuss why there is such a large discrepancy. We also demonstrate how a Markov chain model accurately matches simulations. And finally, we develop a full model of data durability in Seagate solutions, including distributed parity, multi-layer erasure coding, and unrecoverable errors (corrupt sectors). • The main goal of the presentation is to address misconceptions about data durability and availability, and to establish a common language for computation of these metrics. • Dr. Serkay Ölmez has 10 years’ experience at Seagate in modeling device reliability. He has been developing mathematical models and simulations to compute data durability and availability in redundant systems.
