Search for Missing Indigenous Child Advances
from Montreal News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
After 50 years of unanswered grief, the Quebec Superior Court has approved a long-awaited exhumation in Joliette to locate the remains of two-month-old Laureanna Echaquan, who vanished in 1973 after being sent alone to a hospital. Her family, who were told she was recovering but later received news of her death — only to be shown a coffin containing a child who didn’t match their daughter — have fought for justice since. Their testimony at the 2017 National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls fueled their quest. Ground-penetrating radar recently detected anomalies in one of four targeted areas, chosen based on family accounts and detection dogs. This is one of only a few such exhumations authorized by the court, part of a broader national effort under a 2021 law helping over 129 Indigenous families search for 221 missing children.
