Season 1 Episode 23: Teacher Voice - A Debrief

from The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching · host Chey & Pav Educational Services, Inc.

In Episode 23 of The Staffroom, Chey and Pav revisit the #EducationNeverDies Twitter chat they moderated a few days prior. The chat was centered around Teacher Voice - how to amplify it, why it is meaningful, what areas of the school do teachers feel voice is most meaningful. The chat was highly successful, organized by the @EduNeverDies group of educators, focused on developing a culture of dialogue and conversation amongst all on Twitter.  Chey and Pav found that there were three themes that emerged from the chat. The first one was the notion that Teachers want their voices heard in regards to student advocacy. Chey discussed that he found many teachers felt it was necessary for them to exercise their voices in order to help students get the resources and supports they need in order to succeed. The students needed teachers to advocate and be there for them to be able to thrive.  Pav discussed next that teachers felt they needed their voices heard more so in regards to making changes regarding policy within the school. Teachers felt that there was more of a need to be involved in decision making within the school, and be a part of developing committees, school vision and mission statement, working as a part of staffing committee and developing the scheduling, and so many more areas of the school. Chey and Pav introduced their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Taylor Armstrong from Alabama, who talks about his "Be The Compass" initiative. Taylor is one of the founding members of the "Education Never Dies" group, along with Chey and Pav, and several other incredible educators.  Pav comes back to discuss some of the ways that teachers can exemplify their voice with their administrators, since many of them might not feel comfortable with the idea of open forums to voice their opinions.  They discuss how teachers can model Voice to their students as well before wrapping up.
