Season 1 Episode 30: Online Class Culture Building

In Episode 30 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about establishing a connection with students in the new Online world of teaching. Going into this new way of teaching was, for many, very short notice and abrupt. There was no time to ease students into the idea of it. Much of the culture building that happened in the face-to-face classrooms was disrupted and completely came to a halt once teachers started setting up their online classrooms.  In this episode, Chey and Pav discuss the need for relationship building - to ensure that students are engaged and find meaningful reasons to want to participate in a classroom environment that can feel so isolating at times. It brings students closer to the work, and closer to each other again, when it is so easy to become and remain so distant.  The duo talks about some of the ways that they have been able to lure their students into participating on discussion online, by providing them with some simple prompts that allow them to talk about things they want to discuss. Simple things, like talking about a book they are reading, or they music they are listening to, can be great ways to hook and engage kids to want to be online, and to pick up talking with their friends like they once had.  Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Kavita Tanna, Deputy Director of Inspire Citizens, who discusses the Why of learning in schools with students from around the world. In these more challenging times, Kavita talks about how the organization has had to alter their message and their means for disseminating it.
