Link Love On creative alignment – Brett Henley (for further reading) In this Episode * Alignment as a strong foundation of self and craft that informs what you do day to day (and more importantly, why you do it). * Alignment is about getting closer to your true self as a human and all of the moving parts that matter being in sync both short and long term. * Why it’s important to seek alignment with what will make you feel fucking good so that you can sustain on this long ass journey – not just what will make you sexier and more successful according to external standards. * There are no guides or steps because every alignment journey or process looks completely different. * All of the focus we place as creators on habits, tools, best practices, strategies and plans are a complete waste of energy and time if the foundation of our alignment is missing the why. * Tools we need to go through an alignment exercise: Self awareness; Grace; Patience; Courage to be present and to show up no matter how sloppy it gets. * Grace to forgive the missteps, mistakes and not always knowing what we should be doing * How to get started by reflecting on your truth and asking some tough questions (e.g. What kind of work do you feel truly connected to – regardless of viability or profitability?) * Why it’s important to first take stock of everything currently in your life/work ecosystem (rituals/routines/habits; creative tasks related to your business; distractions). * My alignment process starting with “write everything down on paper so you can examine and reflect on each item,” and how I used the filter “is this something valuable, something that is contributing to a healthy alignment or is it pulling me away?” to get rid of anything that didn’t serve. * Why I started writing what I felt most connected to and what I felt would best serve others and let go of a lot of the pressure and anxiety associated with achievement for the purity of creating in the moment. * How simplifying daily rituals has helped me uncomplicate my relationship with change — exchanging the cyclical anxiety of get better for feeling good. * Why it’s important to remember that alignment takes practice — in many ways, like presence, it is a muscle that must be exercised and honed over time. * Why you should let go of anything that doesn’t serve your true self and reprioritize everything you do on a daily basis to be in alignment with this true self. * Always remember – alignment is a process, not an outcome.
